Meet the Artist
"Flowers do not indulge in sentiment. They indulge in passion, nothing but passion. They make love all the time." Octave Mirbeau

I used to paint landscapes, then one day there was a vase of flowers in my studio and so I decided to paint them. That was it, I was hooked! I love responding to real things and flowers after all are so lovely in their infinite variety. Painting them allows you to look closely and appreciate their full beauty, their sometimes outrageous shapes or other times subtleties, and I never tire of this. I hope to capture these qualities in my artwork.

Claire Winteringham studied Textiles at Manchester Metropolitan University and has been a professional artist - paintings, illustration and design - since graduating with 1st. Class BA.Hons in 1978.
It was there she learnt the fundamental skills of observation, drawing and appreciation of colour.
At the end of her studies she won a North West Arts Bursary to help consult at Quarry Bank Mill, Styal Cheshire for one year. She was also invited to take up various part time posts as a visiting lecturer at the University of Central England in Birmingham, Manchester Met and Solihull College of Technology which lasted until 1994.

For many years she worked as Gallery Five’s most prominent freelance artist. Then, for a brief period, she was employed with David Davies Associates in London as an in-house illustrator.
Art Angels, The Art Group, Ikea and Paperlink have also published her work as posters, giftwrap and cards.

Her highly individual watercolours  - landscape, still life, flowers - are almost always drawn from life. They typically combine inspired use of colour with superb drawing ability and embody her natural sense of design. Individuals and corporations worldwide have acquired her paintings through exhibitions and private shows in the UK and abroad. Commissions include work for Sir Richard and Lady Branson, Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery and the 3i Business Centre.
